The culprit behind a failed hip or knee replacements might be found in the mouth. DNA testing of bacteria from the fluid that lubricates hip and knee joints had bacteria with the same DNA as the plaque from patients with gum disease and in need of a joint replacement.

This study is one of many coming from the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine that have linked oral bacteria to health problems when they escape from the mouth and enter the blood.

At Dougherty Dental we review your health history routinely to ensure we are following any protocols related your joint and heart health. As of the most recent updates from the American Heart Association and the American Orthopedic Associations, the following patients should have some form of antiobiotic prior to some dental treatments:

artificial heart valves

a history of infective endocarditis

a cardiac transplant that develops a heart valve problem

the following congenital (present from birth) heart conditions:*

unrepaired or incompletely repaired cyanotic congenital heart disease, including those with palliative shunts and conduits

a completely repaired congenital heart defect with prosthetic material or device, whether placed by surgery or by catheter intervention, during the first six months after the procedure

any repaired congenital heart defect with residual defect at the site or adjacent to the site of a prosthetic patch or a prosthetic device.

People who took prophylactic antibiotics in the past but no longer need them include those with:

mitral valve prolapse

rheumatic heart disease

bicuspid valve disease

calcified aortic stenosis

congenital (present from birth) heart conditions such as ventricular septal defect, atrial septal defect and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

* Check with your cardiologist if you’re not sure whether or not you fall into one of these categories.

Those with a history of total joint replacements are currently being asked to pre-medicated with an antibiotic prior to dental treament.

As always, please don’t hesitate to ask us at Dougherty Dental in LaJolla, CA if you have any further questions regarding your oral health.

Xylitol is a natural sweetener derived from plants. The wonderful thing about xylitol is that it does not break down like sugar and can help keep a neutral PH level in the mouth. The frequent eating of foods that are high in sugar and starches can promote tooth decay. Clinical studies have shown that incorporating 8 to 10 grams of xylitol, found in xylitol-rich products, into your daily routine may reduce the risk of tooth decay and improve overall oral health. Contact us today at Dougherty Dental to ask about the amazing benefits of xylitol. For more information on xylitol please visit http://www.xylitol.org/dental-benefits-of-xylitol. You can also see a complete product line of xylitol rich products at www.sprydental.com.

Itero is a highly accurate digital scanning system for your crown or bridge taht completely eliminates the uncomfortable tray and putty impression. With Itero the only thing that touches your teeth is the tip of a hand held wand. The scanner can be stopped and started as many times as necessary. You will never be stuck with a mouth full of goop! The Itero digital impression system creates an exact replica of what is in your mouth. This results in a more accurate-fitting crown or bridge. Dougherty Dental has had the Itero scanner for over three years now and use it every day in our practice. Please visit the following link for more information on the Itero technology http://www.cadentinc.com/itero/itero.php?section=Professional&page=Creating_a_Digital_Impression.
