At Dougherty Dental, we are dedicated to preserving not only your oral health, but your overall health as well. Our dentists provide oral cancer screenings in La Jolla, California, to help detect any health issues early on, when treatment can be easier and more effective. Oral cancer can occur anywhere in the mouth, as well as in the tonsils, throat and salivary glands. You should inspect our mouth on a regular basis, and any time you notice a change in the color or texture of any of your oral tissues, call our office to schedule an appointment.
What are the symptoms I should look for?
In its earliest stages, oral cancer may not be painful and may have symptoms similar to other health problems. However, you should call our office if you notice any of the following problems:
- Red or white patches anywhere in the soft tissues of your mouth
- Thickening of the oral tissues
- A lump or swelling
- A sore throat, hoarseness or trouble swallowing
- Pain in your mouth or throat
- Difficulty eating
- Ill-fitting dentures
What are the risk factors for oral cancer?
Your risk for oral cancer increases with age, especially in men over 40. Tobacco use of any kind greatly increases the risk of oral cancer, especially when combined with alcohol use. A poor diet can be a factor, and the human papillomavirus or HPV has been linked to the disease as well.
