What are dental implants and how do they work?

Dental implants are proven tooth replacements that can last for many years with the proper care and maintenance. With dental implants, you can avoid the discomfort of ill-fitting dentures, bridges and other restorations. Our La Jolla dentists are very experienced in implant procedures, so you can trust that your dental implants will look and feel like your natural teeth.

Implants are made up of three parts:

  • A surgical-grade titanium post surgically inserted into the jawbone
  • An abutment that connects the titanium post to the crown
  • A strong, durable, tooth-colored restoration that covers the implant abutment

Once your implant post has been placed, a healing period is necessary before the final restoration is added. The final restoration you’ll get depends on your individual needs, so it can be a dental bridge, crown, or even dentures! No matter what restoration you get, your new tooth will look great and function in a way that allows you to chew, talk and smile normally.
