Is your tooth infected? Dr. Paul E. Dougherty and Dr. Scott O. Szotko may recommend a root canal treatment to restore your tooth and oral health.
What is a root canal?
A root canal is a type of endodontic treatment. Endodontics is the field of dental care that treats problems involving the dental pulp (nerves) and roots of the tooth. Root canals are usually recommended when the pulp or roots are damaged, decayed or infected. It is often the only alternative to a tooth extraction. Many dentists prefer performing root canals to extractions, as it allows you to keep your original tooth and does not require more extensive treatment to replace the missing tooth.
How does a root canal work?
When you receive a root canal, our dentists will remove the infected and injured tissues from within your tooth. They will then clean the tooth and fill it with a medicated material to prevent re-infection. The tooth will then be capped with a temporary restoration while a permanent crown is created. The permanent crown will complete the treatment and restore your tooth to its original shape and structure.
In most cases, a root canal treatment can be completed in just one or two visits.
Modern dentistry and root canals
Root canal treatments have a reputation for being painful. Modern dentistry, however, makes it possible for your root canal to be completed with minimal discomfort. There are a number of advanced techniques, technologies and tools that our dentists can use when performing your treatment to make it less invasive and more effective. Anesthetic and sedation options are also available to help manage your discomfort.
