Dougherty Dental provides sleep dentistry in the greater San Diego area to help you reclaim your oral and overall health and your quality of life. Whether you are visiting for sleep apnea treatment or TMJ treatment or to receive a night guard for bruxism, Dr. Dougherty, Dr. Dr. Szotko and our team are here to help you.
Why sleep dentistry?
Getting a good night’s sleep is important in more ways than one. Not only do you feel better and have more energy when well-rested, you are healthier overall. Your body needs sleep as much as it needs air and food. Sleep gives your body the opportunity to heal itself and restore its chemical balance.
Adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep to remain healthy and keep their mind and body functioning properly. Research has linked poor sleep patterns and sleep deprivation to a wide range of health problems, including:
- Weight gain
- Weakened immune system
- Impaired short- and long-term memory
- Difficulty concentrating
- Daytime drowsiness and excessive sleepiness
- Anxiety, depression and other mood changes, including irritability
- High blood pressure
- Increased risk of diabetes
- Increased risk of heart disease
- Increased risk of respiratory problems
- Poor balance
- Changes in hormone production, including hormones that affect growth, healing and libido
When you visit our office, our experienced dentists will discuss your health and dental or medical problems with you and perform an examination to determine which type of sleep dentistry will be most beneficial for you. We will review all treatment options with you so that you can make the best decision for yourself.
Common sleep disorders
There are several types of sleep-related disorders. The most common sleep disorder is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This is a medical condition characterized by interruptions and pauses in breathing while asleep. These interruptions are caused due to obstructions in the airway, such as collapsed airway tissues or the tongue rolling back in the throat, and cause your sleep to be fragmented and decrease the oxygen levels in your body.
Other sleep disorders include insomnia, hypersomnia (daytime drowsiness), teeth grinding (bruxism), narcolepsy, snoring and parasomnia.
When you visit our La Jolla, California, dental office, we will work with you to determine which type of sleep disorder you suffer from and which sleep dentistry treatment will be most effective in meeting your needs.
