When is a night guard recommended?

Night guards may be recommended to treat a number of conditions, including:

  • Bruxism (teeth grinding) and teeth clenching
  • TMJ disorders (bite adjustment or occlusal splinting)
  • Sleep apnea

While night guards may be provided to treat a number of conditions, they are most commonly recommended for treating bruxism. Some common symptoms of bruxism include:

  • Chronic jaw, facial and ear pain
  • A tired or tight feeling in the jaw upon waking
  • Frequent tension headaches and migraines
  • Excessive tooth wear
  • Chipped or cracked teeth
  • Indentations on the side of the tongue
  • Increased tooth sensitivity

When you visit our Dougherty Dental Dentists, we will thoroughly examine your mouth and oral structures to determine the exact nature of the problem and whether or not a night guard will be beneficial for you.

Night guards are custom-designed to fit your mouth comfortably and provide an effective treatment so that you can begin the process of regaining your healthy smile.

What to expect when you receive a night guard

When you receive a night guard, Dr. Dougherty and Dr. Szotko will take a series of digital or physical impressions. These impressions are then used to design and craft your oral appliance. Night guards are made from durable, high-quality materials to ensure that they function properly and will not break easily. Once your night guard has been completed, you will return to our office for a fitting to ensure that it fits properly and feels comfortable.
